Im having trouble connecting my laptop to my tv using a vga to vga cable?

I have a Samsung R519 laptop running windows 7. The laptop recognises that I have plugged it into the tv and I have tried the options it gives regarding sending the image to the tv. My tv is a Sony KDL 32ex301. The problem I have is that when I select the external input on the tv the pc does not appear as connected and I can’t select it.
Thanks for your answer and trying to help. I rang the sony helpline in the end. The problem was that the TV was set to automatically recognise when a laptop is connected. It was not doing this so you had to go to Settings>ExternalInput>AVPreset>Then set the PC Input to Always rather than Auto. That way it is always set to discover your laptop when you connect it.

I forget, but think I have had this problem on friends’ TV to computer setups. VGA may not support HD. So, your computer is sending a screen resolution the TV doesn’t recognize for its allowed VGA input settings and ignores it. If your video card has one, I would suggest using a DVI connector on your video card with a DVI to DVI cable and using a DVI-HDMI adapter to go into your TV. Or, you can spend a good chunk of change and get a DVI-HDMI cable. An HDMI-DVI adapter is about $ 18 at WalMart.
